Race Report: Shumskas takes on European Stage Racing with USAC
Paige Shumskas is currently racing in Europe as part of the USA Cycling Junior Women’s National Team Program. In her first trip to Europe, we had long discussions about expectations, what to expect, and most importantly – what snacks to bring. She’s proven to exceed every expectation we placed in front of her, and made her first European racing campaign look like a breeze. This is truly an invaluable experience that we are pleased to support, and we can guarantee this won’t be her last.
Paige continued to show improvement through each stage of racing, finishing the final 3rd stage in 13th place, and 36th in the overall GC.
Paige will now start the UCI 2.2 Gracia Orlava, a 4 day 5 stage race event, racing with the elite women. She begins racing on Thursday, ending on Saturday. Then she’ll fly home on Sunday, and wake up early Monday morning for an AP Computer Science Final exam. Paige will be attending the University of Deleware next fall as a freshman!
“These trips with the Junior Women are meant to give opportunity and introduction to the European style of racing and to start the foundation for a bright future as an up-and-coming U.S. athlete,” said U.S. Coach Jack Seehafer. “This last weekend’s race was another great learning opportunity for our Junior Women. For the majority of the group, it was an introduction to European racing, and a great team building event. They had the chance to race as a team for the sprinters jersey, and although they lost, it brought them together as a unit and opened up further discussions on team dynamics.”
